Samsung Electronics Union Suspends Planned General Strike in S. Korea

(MENAFN) Unionized workers at Samsung Electronics in South Korea have decided to suspend their planned general strike, according to reports citing local media.

The union’s joint headquarters announced that the strike originally scheduled from May 21 to June 7 would be postponed indefinitely, Korean news agency reported.

The walkout had been set to begin on Thursday and continue for 18 days, but was halted as discussions over a tentative wage agreement progressed.

Under the proposed deal, Samsung would provide a special semiconductor performance bonus equal to 10.5% of business performance earnings, with no upper limit.

Despite the suspension of strike action, a group of shareholders said they intend to pursue legal steps against the tentative agreement, arguing that it is unlawful.

The proposed wage deal is expected to be put to a union membership vote between Friday and Wednesday, which will determine whether it is formally adopted.
